Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool interest in a former Manchester United defender ahead of the January transfer window.

Not too many players have been linked to the club after the summer transfer window ground to a halt in September.

There have been murmurings of whether Liverpool could return for Martin Zubimendi in January following Real Sociedad’s poor start to the season.

However, the Spaniard’s words in recent press conferences all point towards him sticking it out in San Sebastian until at least the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, there has been no shortages of links to the Bundesliga – with SportBILD seemingly convinced that the Reds are in for a young Freiburg midfielder.

But today our attention turns to Benfica man Alvaro Carreras, who has caught the attention this season as part of an Eagles team that recently beat Athletico Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League.

Carreras had initially joined Manchester United’s academy and was seen as a promising young talent.

However, with the competition for places at left-back, especially from the likes of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, United opted to sell him.

Now, with both Shaw and Malacia facing injury concerns, the decision to sell Carreras to Benfica for just £5 million this past summer is being re-evaluated by some fans and pundits.

What did Fabrizio Romano report on Alvaro Carreras

As mentioned, Carreras has impressed since joining Benfica, making him a potential target for Liverpool, who are keen to strengthen their left-back options.

However, Manchester United have reportedly included a buyback clause in his transfer, allowing them to re-sign him for approximately £16 million, giving United an advantage if they wish to bring him back

Writing in his Daily Briefing, Fabrizio Romano appeared to confirm prior reports of Liverpool interest, saying:

“Alvaro Carreras to Liverpool?

The former Manchester United left-back is being looked at by the Reds, as well as other top clubs…”

Arne Slot seems to value full-backs who can contribute both defensively and offensively, and Carreras fits that profile and then some:

From the underlying data, we can see why the Reds and other clubs are interested in the 21-year-old.

While Liverpool’s interest is clear, Manchester United’s buyback clause adds a layer of complexity to any potential deal, as the Red Devils may opt to trigger it if they see Carreras as a long-term solution to their left-back problems

Liverpool’s need for general depth and freshness, particularly with Andy Robertson getting older and older, makes Carreras a valuable target.

His ability to adapt quickly in the Portuguese league has made him a standout performer, but Manchester United’s hold over his future could deter Liverpool from advancing their pursuit.

As the January transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Manchester United will exercise their buyback clause or allow Carreras to explore other opportunities.
