Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool interest in a former Manchester United defender ahead of the January transfer window.

Not too many players have been linked to the club after the summer transfer window ground to a halt in September.

There have been murmurings of whether Liverpool could return for Martin Zubimendi in January following Real Sociedad’s poor start to the season.

However, the Spaniard’s words in recent press conferences all point towards him sticking it out in San Sebastian until at least the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, there has been no shortages of links to the Bundesliga – with SportBILD seemingly convinced that the Reds are in for a young Freiburg midfielder.

But today our attention turns to Benfica man Alvaro Carreras, who has caught the attention this season as part of an Eagles team that recently beat Athletico Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League.

Carreras had initially joined Manchester United’s academy and was seen as a promising young talent.

However, with the competition for places at left-back, especially from the likes of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, United opted to sell him.

Now, with both Shaw and Malacia facing injury concerns, the decision to sell Carreras to Benfica for just £5 million this past summer is being re-evaluated by some fans and pundits.

Writing in his Daily Briefing, Fabrizio Romano appeared to confirm prior reports of Liverpool interest, saying:
