Fabrizio Romano has just dropped his latest update on Liverpool-linked Riccardo Calafiori.

The Italian defender is in high demand after his performances for both Bologna and Italy this past season.

Calafiori has made significant strides since joining Bologna from FC Basel last year.

His performances in Serie A, where he played a pivotal role in helping Bologna qualify for the UEFA Champions League, have drawn attention from top clubs across Europe?.

He featured in 30 matches during the 2023/24 Serie A season, contributing five assists and playing a crucial role in their successful season.

Despite Italy’s round of 16 exit to Switzerland, Calafiori played 100% of the minutes available in the group stage but was suspended for the defeat against Switzerland.

His versatility, being able to play both as a center-back and left-back, and his left-footedness makes him an attractive target for Liverpool, who could be looking to bolster their defensive options following Joel Matip’s departure.

What did Fabrizio Romano say on Riccardo Calafiori?

The Italian transfer guru has concerningly left out Liverpool in his latest update, and instead has stated that it is Arsenal that are the most interested in the player.

This comes after Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Arsenal were the Premier League club most interested in Calafiori as well.

Speaking to CaughtOffside’s Daily Briefing, Fabrizio Romano said:

“Arsenal’s interest in Riccardo Calafiori is there, and negotiations could be something to mention in the next days.”

“Arsenal and Chelsea are the two clubs interested in Calafiori, though we’re waiting for a bid and for formal steps.”

“Still, the interest is there, because both clubs are looking for a similar player – left-footed, and someone who can play either left-back or centre-back,” the transfer journalist explained

“So, Calafiori is on Arsenal’s list, though they also have other names, and it’s the same for Chelsea – both clubs are very interested, so we’ll provide an update if or when they make proposals.”

“For now, they’re still waiting to understand the player’s preference and also how much is needed for Bologna; the price tag is not clear yet, some sources suggest around €45-50m [£38.1-42.3m] because his former club Basel will receive almost 50% on the future sale.”

No mention of Liverpool from Fabrizio Romano, which means that Liverpool may not be looking to sign Calafiore this summer.

Many Reds fans believe a centre-back is a priority, especially with Joel Matip’s recent departure.

Indeed, the last senior central defender purchased by the club was Ibrahima Konate in 2021.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool make a move for Calafiori, but Romano’s latest update suggests that he is not even in the picture at Anfield anymore.
