Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest on Darwin Nunez after reports emerged this week after Saudi Arabian interest.
The 25-year-old’s 2024/25 campaign has been emblematic of his turbulent Liverpool career since his high-profile €85 million transfer from Benfica in 2022.
Despite flashes of brilliance, the Uruguayan striker has struggled to consistently deliver goals and performances befitting his price tag.
Under new manager Arne Slot, Nunez has found himself increasingly marginalized, with just four goals and three assists in 24 appearances across all competitions this season—a disappointing return for Liverpool’s No.
He has been displaced in the starting lineup by Luis Díaz, who has thrived in a central role, and Diogo Jota, whose finishing has been far more clinical.
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler even recently remarked that Nunez “is not a Liverpool player.”
What did Fabrizio Romano say about Darwin Nunez?
Amid these struggles, reports emerged last night that Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal have submitted a £70 million bid for Darwin Núñez.
The offer, while substantial, was rejected by the Anfield club but it still signals how serious Saudi Arabia in acquiring the forward.
Al-Hilal are reportedly prepared to offer Núñez a staggering weekly wage of £400,000, more than double his current salary at Anfield.
It is believed that the club want close to £75 million to sanction the sale of the Uruguayan.
Now Fabrizio Romano has provided his latest on Darwin Nunez, confirming that there is interest but unable to confirm if an offer has indeed been made at this stage:
“What I can confirm at the moment is only that interest from Saudi in Darwin Nunez is genuine,” the Italian said on his YouTube channel.
“There have been conversations to understand the situation of Darwin, the price tag and all these sorts of things.
“For sure there is something in terms of contacts but at the moment there is nothing advanced in terms of negotiations.
“We have to respect Liverpool – Darwin is an important player for them and they spent important money on him?
There are still plenty of things to do and at the moment, we are not at that stage.”
While some fans hope the striker can turn his fortunes around during the second half of the season, others see this as an opportunity for Liverpool to recoup their investment and move forward with a more consistent attacking option.
