Liverpool are on the verge of losing out on a key transfer target, as Olympique Marseille prepare to sign French international Adrien Rabiot.
The midfielder, who became a free agent after leaving Juventus this summer, looks set to head to Ligue 1, despite being heavily linked with a move to Anfield.
With just two signings made in the summer—Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa—Liverpool fans were hoping for more reinforcements in midfield.
Especially with the recent departures of Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho, a big-name signing like Rabiot would have been a perfect addition to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad.
Fabrizio Romano, the trusted transfer expert, confirmed Marseille’s pursuit of Rabiot, tweeting:
“Olympique Marseille are in advanced talks to sign Adrien Rabiot as a new midfielder!
Negotiations underway with Rabiot on contract terms.
However, the project presented by Marseille’s leadership trio—Longoria, Benatia, and de Zerbi—seems to have swayed the Frenchman towards a move back to Ligue 1.
As Liverpool look set to miss out on the ‘world-class’ midfielder, fans might be left wondering if the quiet summer transfer window could come back to haunt them.
With the season underway and competition fierce, the Reds could’ve used a player of Rabiot’s calibre to boost their midfield options.
For now, it looks like Rabiot will be donning the blue of Marseille instead of the red of Liverpool.
