Fabrizio Romano has addressed some of the Anthony Gordon reports and speculation that has been doing the rounds this week.
Talks between Liverpool and Newcastle reportedly took place during June, with Liverpool showing keen interest in acquiring the 23-year-old as they saw Gordon as a ‘unique market opportunity’.
However, negotiations hit a snag primarily due to Newcastle’s high valuation of Gordon, reportedly in the region of £75-80 million, potentially rising to £100 million with add-ons.
Liverpool hesitated, particularly given Newcastle’s initial request to include players like Jarell Quansah as part of a swap deal.
The Reds were unwilling to part with Quansah, who had a breakthrough season? last term and showcased against Arsenal last night that his potential is immense.
Moreover, Newcastle’s financial situation played a crucial role in the discussions.
The Magpies were under pressure to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which required them to balance their books by the end of the June.
Despite being open to selling some of their top players, Newcastle’s management eventually managed to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson for a combined fee close to £60m to avoid any repercussions.
But this week, reports claimed that Joe Gomez was likewise discussed in a potential swap deal, with the 27-year-old reportedly weighing up his options now having been offered the chance to be important at St James’ Park.
Furthermore, it is also believed that striker Alexander Isak was offered to the Anfield club at the height of Newcastle’s PSR panic, but the price quoted immediately left the Reds uninterested.
Now Fabrizio Romano has provided a brief update on the matter.
What did Fabrizio Romano say about Anthony Gordon?
Gordon, who joined Newcastle from Everton for £45 million in January 2023, had an impressive 2023/24 season, tallying 12 goals and 11 assists.
Now Fabrizio Romano, speaking to the Daily Briefing, as revealed that he has been flooded with questions on Gordon:
“I’m receiving lots of questions on Anthony Gordon guys, but I was only told that Liverpool discussed several potential swap deals in June, not the specific values that have been mentioned elsewhere in the media.”
“I don’t have confirmation on the numbers being talked about but, for sure Liverpool wanted Gordon and they remain interested in the player, considering him an excellent winger,” Romano said.
“Let’s see what Liverpool will do this month, but appreciation for Gordon remains; I’m 100% sure of that.”
So perhaps some of the numbers being quoted – with reports suggesting £80m plus – are premature at this stage.
It is unlikely that Liverpool would want to being paying that for a relatively inexperienced winger.
While Gordon himself is reportedly open to the idea of joining the Reds, the logistical and financial complexities have stalled the move.
There is speculation that Liverpool might revisit the deal if circumstances change, especially if they can create space in the squad by offloading other players.
However, with the transfer window nearing its close, time is running out for a resolution?.
