Fabrizio Romano has reported his latest Liverpool news amid the ongoing international break.

The Reds weathered interest from clubs with deep pockets during the January window.

Real Madrid made significant efforts to secure the services of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold during the January transfer window, with reports confirming they submitted a formal bid for the England international right-back.

The Spanish giants, looking to capitalize on Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation – he becomes a free agent this summer – attempted to force Liverpool’s hand with a mid-season offer.

Real Madrid’s initial proposal was worth approximately €20 million (£20 million), which Liverpool promptly rejected.

In a parallel January transfer saga, Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez was the subject of serious interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, with negotiations reaching advanced stages before collapsing at the final hurdle.

Al-Nassr submitted two formal bids for the Uruguayan forward.

Their second offer reportedly exceeded £62.4 million plus add-ons, coming close to Liverpool’s valuation.

Meanwhile, rival Saudi club Al-Hilal were prepared to offer Nunez an astonishing salary package worth approximately £29 million per year – equivalent to £558,000 weekly – a substantial increase from his current estimated £120,000 weekly wage at Liverpool.

But the Reds’ reluctance to sell stemmed from their involvement in four competitions at the time and the inability to secure a suitable replacement before the transfer deadline.

Now Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Darwin Nunez was in fact very close to a move away from Anfield in the winter, with the player himself keen on the exit:

“According to my information, Darwin was already very open to joining Al Nassr in January,” the Italian said on his YouTube channel.

“He was ready to say yes to Saudi, ready to say yes to the project and then Liverpool decided to keep him in the current squad and not change anything.’

“There was no player available in January in terms of their own transfer targets?

They have a list for the summer but those players weren’t available, so Liverpool decided against investing money in a player they didn’t 100% trust in January and to wait for the summer.”

After failing to land Nunez, Al-Nassr pivoted to sign Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran to partner Cristiano Ronaldo in their attack.

Despite the transfer not materializing, it’s widely believed that Nunez will move on in the summer.
