Federico Chiesa was handed a first start in four months as Liverpool’s flawless Champions League campaign came to an end last night.

Although the Reds suffered a 3-2 defeat to the home side, Arne Slot’s side still finished top of the league phase.

A much-changed Liverpool lineup took the lead through Cody Gakpo’s 28th-minute penalty on his return to his former club after Federico Chiesa was fouled in the box.

PSV equalized through Johan Bakayoko, who found the bottom corner following excellent build-up play from Ricardo Pepi.

The Reds restored their advantage when Harvey Elliott converted after Chiesa’s shot was parried into his path.

However, PSV struck twice before halftime – first through Ismael Saibari who fired into the roof of the net, before Pepi completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time with a neat, flicked finish.

Liverpool’s evening worsened when debutant Amara Nallo received a straight red card for a last-man challenge on Bakayoko with just three minutes remaining.

Despite the defeat, Liverpool secured top spot in the league phase with 21 points, two clear of Barcelona who could only draw their final match

Chiesa still showcased he had the ability with a few neat step overs and played a hand in Harvey Elliott’s goal after his initial shot was deflected.

Now he has spoken about these past few months.

What did Federico Chiesa say after PSV?

Speaking to LFCTV after the game, Chiesa revealed that he wants to prove himself at Liverpool:

“For me it was great, I needed it?

Since I joined Liverpool I wanted to prove myself, I couldn’t for many reasons,” Chiesa said.

“90 minutes after a while was great so I have to thank the coach.:

“There is room for improvement, to get better and better and be at the best of my game,” the Italian said.

There has been plenty of transfer speculation about a return to Italy, but the 27-year-old has emphatically stated that he ‘wants to play for Liverpool;’

“But we have a great team and it’s hard to play, that’s normal,” he stressed.

“I want to be here, I want to play for Liverpool, I want to challenge myself and I will be ready for my next opportunity.”

“Of course I didn’t get the chance to play for many reasons and this is he first 90 minutes in a while so I’m just happy tonight, focused on that.”

“I’m enjoying being at the club because Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world, the fanbase is just amazing and playing at Anfield gives me shivers.”

“I’m playing with great players, in a great team, we are so focused on every competition, we want to challenge for every title,” he said.

“There’s a great atmosphere and I enjoy myself here.”

The 27-year-old managed to complete the full 90 minutes, an important factor given how his season has gone so far.

He created two of Liverpool’s five shots on target and demonstrated his pace and hunger to get forward.

It could be a big second half of the season for Chiesa.
