Arne Slot has revealed the one thing he noticed about his team during the Red’s Premier League match against Wolves that he has not seen before.
Following back-to-back poor results in the FA Cup and in the Merseyside Derby, Liverpool laboured to a 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday.
It’s not like they were expected to trample an improving Wolves side on Sunday.
But after going 2-0 up in the first half courtesy of goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, it was as though Liverpool would stroll to another win at Anfield as they did in their two previous home games against Tottenham (4-0) and Ipswich Town (4-1).
However, what followed was a below-par second half that saw the Reds under the cosh and needing the heroics of Alisson Becker to secure the win.
Liverpool’s only meaningful second-half attack came in the form of a rightly disallowed Diogo Jota penalty.
Shortly after this, Matheus Cunha scored for the visitors in the 67th minute to set up a nervy finish.
In the end, Liverpool held on to secure their 18th win of the season, extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 21 games, and keep their seven-point lead at the top of the table.
After the game, Liverpool boss Arne Slot discussed his side’s second-half performance, admitting that fatigue from their last two games contributed to poor showing.
What Arne Slot said
Discussing the result and performance in the post-match press conference, Slot told Sky Sports: “Just as big as all the other ones, but this one is big.
“We needed to fight, and we needed Alisson.
Wins like this should also be included where you want to achieve something.”
On Liverpool’s failure to create few second-half goal-scoring chances or attempt a shot on goal, Slot said:
“It’s never the gameplan never to create anything at all.
If this is what it takes to win a game, then I’m happy the players could do that again.”
The Liverpool boss added that he noticed that his players were more tired in the win on Sunday than they have been at any point this season.
“Fatigue comes from running a lot and a bit of mental fatigue a lot,” he added.
“We were mentally tested today.
I did see for the first time this season that players were more tired than they have been.”
