Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Arsenal is looking to secure the signing of a reported Liverpool target.
The Gunners have seen their title challenge evaporate in front of their eyes over the last two weeks, with one point collected from their last two games against West Ham and Nottingham Forest.
The glaring absence of a clinical No.9 was once again painfully evident against Forest, with the visitors managing just a single shot on target in the match.
Now the widening gulf between Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League title race has thrown a harsh spotlight on the Gunners’ decision to forego significant investment in a central striker, with Mikel Arteta’s side now trailing the Merseyside club by a seemingly insurmountable 13-point margin with just ten matches remaining.
Speaking on the January transfer window, Arteta confessed that he was disappointed at the lack of business:
“We had a clear intention which is always there is a window open to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can impact it,” Arteta said.
“We haven’t achieved it, so we are disappointed in that sense.”
And while Mikel Merino is pinned with their last gasp title hopes for the rest of the campaign, it seems Arsenal are still looking towards midfielders.
That’s because Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has reported that Arsenal has ‘held talks’ with reported Liverpool target Joshua Kimmich – who has attracted attention ever since it emerged that Bayern Munich have withdrawn their contract offer.
As things stand, the 30-year-old will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
Sky Sport Switzerland have reported that the German international is Liverpool’s ‘top target’ should Trent Alexander-Arnold depart.
The Gunners are eyeing Kimmich as a potential free transfer to replace Jorginho in their midfield.
Kimmich’s current situation has become more complex, as he has received two formal offers from clubs outside Germany, including one from a Premier League side.
These offers have prompted Kimmich to reconsider extending his contract with Bayern Munich, which would keep him at the club until 2028 with a substantial salary package of €20-22 million gross per year.
Taking to X, the reporter asserted:
“For several days, Arsenal FC have been one of the clubs with a concrete interest in Joshua Kimmich and have held talks.”
“Kimmich now has received two written offers from abroad.
One from the Premier League.”
“He has informed Bayern about the offers.
But from Kimmich’s camp, it is said that discussions with [Bayern directors] Eberl/Freund are still ongoing.”
Bayern Munich, for their part, are open to resuming contract talks with Kimmich.
However, their stance has shifted, and they are now only willing to offer terms that match or potentially decrease his current compensation.
The German skipper currently earns €375,000 per week (approximately £325,000) at Bayern Munich, ranking as the fifth-highest paid player at the club?
His annual salary is estimated to be €19.5 million.
