Peter Krawietz, Jurgen Klopp’s trusted lieutenant for over 25 years, has embarked on his first coaching role since leaving Liverpool last summer.
Krawietz departed Liverpool alongside Klopp in June 2024 after nearly nine years at the club, concluding a partnership that began at Mainz in the 1990s and flourished through Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga triumphs.
Known for his tactical analysis and behind-the-scenes influence, Krawietz opted for a sabbatical post-Anfield,
His hiatus lasted just nine months however and has now been announced as the new RB Leipzig interim assistant manager.
The Bundesliga club parted ways with manager Marco Rose on March 30 after a sixth-place league standing and underwhelming Champions League campaign, paving the way for Zsolt Löw’s interim appointment as head coach.
An official RB Leipzig statement confirmed Peter Krawietz’s appointment:
“Zsolt Löw has been appointed new head coach of RB Leipzig.
The 45-year-old, who was previously Head of Soccer Development at Red Bull, will sign a contract until the end of the 2024/25 season and take charge of his first training session on Monday.
Peter Krawietz (53) will be Löw’s assistant coach in Leipzig.”
Krawietz’s move to Leipzig intertwines with Klopp’s broader role at Red Bull, where he assumed the position of global head of soccer in January 2025.
While Klopp’s exact influence on the decision remains unspecified, the timing of Krawietz’s hiring—days after Rose’s dismissal—suggests collaboration within the Red Bull hierarchy.
Leipzig’s official announcement noted Krawietz will assist Löw “for the remainder of the 2024/25 season,” starting with Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal semi-final against Stuttgart135.
The appointment continues a pattern of former Liverpool staff migrating to Red Bull affiliates.
Pep Lijnders and Vitor Matos, Klopp’s other former assistants, briefly joined RB Salzburg before their October 2024 dismissal.
Conditioning coach Andreas Kornmayer remains with Salzburg.
Speaking on the Aldo Meets podcast shortly after departing Anfield last summer, Krawietz confessed he could work with Jurgen Klopp once again – and that seemingly has already happened:
“Let’s see how Jurgen feels, what his plans are and if he has an idea, and if it fits me or not, if he wants me in or not.
We will see,” Krawietz said.
“So far, I’m open and not decided yet.
