Darwin Nunez has been one of the most debated players at Liverpool.
Since arriving from Benfica in 2022, the Uruguayan has shown moments of brilliance but also struggled with consistency.
His finishing has often been questioned, and with just seven goals in 40 games this season, speculation about his future has only grown.
Now, reports suggest that Liverpool could cash in on him this summer.
Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest are among the clubs showing interest, and some believe the Reds could move on if the right offer comes in.
But not everyone agrees with this idea.
One former Liverpool defender has stepped in to defend Nunez.
He believes selling the striker would be a mistake – unless a massive bid arrives.
What did the former Liverpool man say about Darwin Nunez?
Steve Nicol made his stance clear during an exchange on ESPN FC.
He argued that Liverpool need depth in the squad and moving Nunez on without a replacement would be a risk.
“Listen, you need a squad.
You’re talking about hoping to be involved in three or four tournaments, so why wouldn’t you have somebody like him?”
“If you don’t have any other option, then what are you supposed to do?”
When host Dan Thomas pushed back, Nicol doubled down on his point.
“I tell you what, let’s get rid of everybody and then worry about it afterwards!
You need a squad.”
“Are you telling me he’s got no goals this year?”
Thomas then asked Nicol to put a price tag on Nunez.
He responded, “£40m maybe.”
It’s clear Nicol sees value in keeping Nunez, even if he hasn’t hit top form.
Whether Liverpool agree remains to be seen.
