Dreams of building something are crushed before they can properly take shape.
It happens at every level, to coaches with big names and small ones alike.
That is exactly what happened to a former Liverpool man over the weekend.
After just six months in charge, he found himself out of a job.
Despite his efforts and confidence that he could still turn things around, the board had seen enough.
Now, another manager search begins, while he looks for his next step.
Neil Critchley, who once managed Liverpool’s Under-18s and even stood in for Jurgen Klopp a few times, has been sacked by Hearts.
Critchley took over from Steven Naismith earlier in the season when the Scottish side was rock bottom of the Premiership.
He helped lift the team out of last place, but results were never consistent enough.
Hearts lost 1-0 at home to Dundee United on Saturday, and the board decided to act.
Speaking after the Dundee defeat, Critchley said he was “confident” in his ability to move the team forward and deliver success next season.
But the Hearts board clearly disagreed.
In an official statement, the club said, “Heart of Midlothian can confirm that it has today parted company with head coach Neil Critchley and his assistant Mike Garrity.”
“The club would like to thank Neil and Mike for their efforts during their time in Gorgie and we wish them well for the future.”
“Liam Fox will take control of first-team affairs on an interim basis.”
“No further comment will be made at this time.”
Critchley had been under pressure for a while.
His team crashed out of the Conference League in December after a poor draw against Petrocub that saw the fans boo them off the pitch.
He also failed to win any of his three derbies against Hibernian and a 0-0 draw at Motherwell ended hopes of making Europe.
Last week, Hearts were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Aberdeen.
It is another tough lesson in senior management for a coach who once looked destined for big things after his time at Liverpool.
