Sepp van den Berg and his time at Liverpool came to an end in August 2024, when the young Dutch defender completed a £25 million move to Brentford after spending five seasons with the Reds.

Having joined Liverpool in 2019 from PEC Zwolle for £4.4 million, van den Berg was initially viewed as a bright prospect for the future.

However, despite some early promise, he never truly broke into the first team, leading to his eventual departure.

The next step in his development saw van den Berg move to the Bundesliga, joining Schalke 04 on loan for the 2022/23 season.

However, his time in Germany was marred by an ankle injury, limiting him to just nine appearances.

Eager to regain form, he returned to the Bundesliga in 2023/24, this time with FSV Mainz 05, where he played a crucial role, making 35 appearances and even scoring three goals?.

In the summer of 2024, Brentford moved for van den Berg, signing him in a deal worth £25 million, including add-ons.

The Dutchman had attracted interest from other clubs, including Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, but opted for the Premier League club, where he could be assured more regular game time.

The former Liverpool man himself was not exactly happy with the Anfield club by the end of it, and was reportedly not happy with the big transfer fee the club put on his head in the summer.

In an interview with Mee Met Oranje, Rav van den Berg hinted that Brentford and Thomas Frank’s promises resonated with his sibling:

“We are both in football and he asked me: ‘What would you do?’ I didn’t want my words to influence his choice, but he especially wanted to hear my opinion,” he said as translated by Sport Witness.

“I told him that playing time was the most important thing and he thought the same.

Although Brentford is a Premier League club, I said: ‘You are good enough for that’.

“Clubs promise you a lot, but Sepp really noticed and felt the confidence.

The coach also lives up to his words, because my brother plays everything?

So far it has been a great step.”

It has indeed been a great step, with the 22-year-old having racked up seven appearances for the Bees so far this term including five in the Premier League.

Liverpool will be hopeful that they do not come rue the decision to let go of the defender later down the line.
