Liverpool could be without up to four players when they face Everton in the Merseyside Derby this week.
The match, scheduled for 19:30 GMT on Wednesday, marks the final derby to be played at the historic Goodison Park before Everton’s move to their new stadium.
Liverpool go into the tie on the back of a disappointing 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round loss to Plymouth Argyle, where Slot heavily rotated his squad.
The loss was Liverpool’s fourth in all competitions this season and ended Slot’s attempt to become the first Liverpool manager to win the four available trophies in a season.
But the Premier League title quest remains alive for Liverpool, who can go nine points clear at the top of the table if they win Everton in midweek.
After recording back-to-back draws against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, the Reds have won their last three league games, keeping two clean sheets in those games.
Those wins form part of a 19-match unbeaten league run (W14, D5), and Liverpool will fancy their chances of extending that record here, having rested a few of the club’s stars in midweek.
Slot heavily rotated his side for the FA Cup game on Sunday, so there should be enough fresh legs on the pitch when they make the short trip across Goodison Park.
However, Liverpool have a few fitness concerns, beginning with Joe Gomez, who picked up an injury in the match against Plymouth.
Joe Gomez
Gomez was named in the starting line-up for the FA Cup trip to Home Park and wore the captain’s armband.
The game was his first since December 29 following a hamstring issue.
However, the defender felt some discomfort during the opening minutes of the game and was subsequently replaced by Isaac Mabaya.
Asked after the game about the fitness of Gomez, Slot was unable to provide details on the defender.
“I am not too sure,” he told the press on Sunday.
“I am not too sure if it was the same leg, but I haven’t had time to ask him.
I think we all know which moment he felt a bit insecure about [it] because he didn’t sprint back fully.
“Then he said, ‘I am not 100 per cent sure, and I am afraid if I make one extra sprint, things will go wrong.’ It’s not torn, I assume, but it didn’t feel good for him.”
Slot will certainly provide more clarity on Gomez’s fitness when he faces the press tomorrow.
Curtis Jones
Curtis Jones has been a bit unlucky with injuries lately.
The midfielder picked up an injury during Liverpool’s win over Lille in the Champions League last month.
Although he has played for the Reds since then, including playing 72 minutes in the Carabao Cup win over Tottenham, it appears he has not fully recovered.
This is according to Slot, who revealed that Jones asked not to be brought on in the game against Plymouth despite being named on the bench.
Speaking to reporters after the game, the Dutchman said:
“That was a bit of a blow because Curtis Jones was on the bench, but he came to me this morning and said, ‘I don’t think I am fully recovered yet’ as well after the training session of yesterday.”
“That all of a sudden led to the fact we were with a few more youngsters on the pitch than was the idea before the game, but still, there was enough quality on the pitch to get a better result than this.”
This leaves Jones as a doubt for the upcoming Merseyside Derby on Wednesday evening.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold sustained an injury in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth on February 1st.
We exclusively revealed that the defender did not sustain a serious injury and will return soon.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed the defender was unfit to play in last week’s Carabao Cup win over Tottenham.
However, the fact that Slot did not select Connor Bradley for the game against Plymouth suggests that Alexander-Arnold is not entirely fit.
Tyler Morton
Tyler Morton sustained an injury last week, with ASlot confirming that the midfielder could be out for up to a month.
Speaking in his pre-Plymouth press conference, the Reds boss said:
“Morton is out with an injury for a while, so that means he was maybe our sixth midfielder and James is taking that position now, so it’s him doing well and the injury to Morton.”
“Morton injury…am I allowed to say?
Four weeks or longer.”
That makes Morton, who was the subject of interest from Middlesbrough in the last transfer window, unavailable for the derby.
