Liverpool is reportedly laying the groundwork for the summer transfer window according to reports from Spain.
The January transfer window closed without any significant additions to Arne Slot’s squad, marking the second consecutive quiet window for the Reds.
This inactivity has left many fans questioning the club’s ambition, especially given the team’s current position at the top of the Premier League table and their progression in multiple competitions
While some argue that Liverpool’s current form justifies the lack of new signings, others fear that the club may be missing opportunities to further strengthen their position
For most Reds fans, hearing about transfer reports and stories is starting to feel like a pointless exercise.
Adding to the fans’ frustrations is the ongoing saga surrounding the contracts of key players Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
All three players’ current deals are set to expire in the summer of 2025, and negotiations for extensions have been progressing slowly.
But it seems the club are still doing their due diligence in the transfer market.
Liverpool show intention for Barcelona star
Spanish outlet E-Noticias has reported that Liverpool are interested in Frenkie De Jong for the summer.
De Jong’s time at Barcelona has been marked by near-constant rumors of his impending departure.
Each transfer window brings a fresh round of speculation, with Manchester United frequently cited as a potential destination.
At the heart of the De Jong controversy lies his substantial salary.
Following a contract restructuring during the COVID-19 pandemic, De Jong’s wages were deferred, leading to a complex financial situation.
Frenkie De Jong?
Based on 1242 minutes played.
His gross annual cost is estimated at a staggering €35 million, making him one of the highest earners in La Liga.
His wage structure has made De Jong a target for fans and media alike, with calls for him to take a pay cut or leave the club entirely.
And while things have calmed down, it seems sporting director Deco could yet offload the financial burden they themselves signed off.
The Spanish outlet reports that Liverpool have already let Deco know of their intention to pay €35m in the summer to secure the Dutch international.
It will hinge on whether the 27-year-old will renew his contract which is set to expire in the summer of 2026.
The Dutch international’s future at Camp Nou is also closely tied to his relationship with manager Hansi Flick.
If Flick continues to show faith in de Jong and values his contribution to the squad, it could significantly influence the player to remain at Barcelona.
Ultimately, the interplay between de Jong’s contract negotiations, Barcelona’s financial considerations, and his standing with Flick will be key factors in determining whether the midfielder stays or departs from the Catalan giants.
