Gary Lineker has revealed the intriguing conversation he had with Mohamed Salah at the AXA Training Centre while filming for the BBC.
Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain as contract negotiations continue to stall with just five months remaining on his current deal.
The Egyptian forward, who has been in spectacular form this season with 25 goals and 17 assists across 33 appearances, has still not given too much away on what the future could hold.
Al-Hilal has emerged as the frontrunner for Salah’s signature, with the Saudi champions viewing him as an ideal replacement for the departed Neymar4.
The Saudi club is reportedly prepared to offer Salah £65 million over two years.
Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal recently emphasized the kingdom’s interest, stating it would be “a privilege to see Mo Salah here” and noting his status as “the most high-profile Muslim player in the world”.
Now Gary Lineker has given us a small look into how Mohamed Salah is feeling about it all – and very relaxed judging by his banter with Lineker.
What did Gary Lineker say about Mohamed Salah?
Gary Lineker has revealed details of a recent conversation with Mohamed Salah during his visit to meet Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
During a discussion about the AXA visit on The Rest Is Football podcast, Alan Shearer inquired about Salah’s future plans at Liverpool, prompting Lineker to reveal a bit on what he spoke about with the Egyptian:
“He’s a lovely guy,” Lineker said.
“I spent 10 minutes with him when I went to visit Arne Slot.”
“‘I didn’t [ask about his future], no.
He asked me, ‘how old were you when you finished?’ And I said, ‘well, English football I finished when I was 32 and then I went to play in Japan for a couple of years’.”
“And he went, ‘ahh, you went for the money did you?’ And I said, ‘well yeah I suppose so’.
But he has got that cheeky sense of humour.”
If Mohamed Salah was very concerned over his future, it would be doubtful that he would be making those kinds of jokes – especially in front of member of the Liverpool staff.
It’s important to recognise that Liverpool’s No.11 was just having a bit of a laugh – as pointed out by Lineker himself.
Liverpool fans are still holding thumbs that an agreement will be reached to keep the 32-year-old on Merseyside.
Mohamed Salah signed his most recent contract extension in July 2022 when his previous contract was due to expire the following summer.
The situation was similar to now, as his contract was entering its final year.
He signed a three-year extension at that time, making him the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history with wages in excess of £350,000 per week.
