Gary Neville has suggested that even Liverpool fans reckon Anfield has lost a touch of its legendary spark after their Champions League dreams were dashed by Paris-Saint Germain.
The top dogs of the Premier League exited the European competition on Tuesday, bowing out 4-1 in a penalty shootout defeat by the French giants, who are now set for a quarter-final clash with Aston Villa.
The Reds' departure from the competition sparked conversation on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast.
Neville and Ian Wright dissected the Anfield atmosphere, which has been under the microscope lately for not being as electric as it's famed to be.
"I thought it [Liverpool's atmosphere at PSG] was one of those, usually even when the opposing team at Liverpool do well, they crank it up, I didn't think the atmosphere was great there," the Arsenal legend noted.
The former Manchester United skipper chimed in and claimed that die-hard Liverpool fans believe that the iconic Anfield roar isn't what it used to be, pointing fingers at the stadium's expansion.
With the Main Stand and the more recent Anfield Road stand developments, the ground now accommodates over 61,000 spectators, reports the Liverpool Echo.
"A lot of people know a lot more about Liverpool than me, but there is a suggestion from hardcore fans that the atmosphere has softened a bit in the last few years with different types of fans coming in and the ground getting bigger," Neville said.
The debate about Liverpool's home atmosphere has been ongoing this season, with Reds legend Jamie Carragher weighing in on the discussion.
The Manchester United legend questioned the Anfield atmosphere following their loss to PSG?
