Gary Neville has claimed that Manchester United should be one of Alexander Isak's possible next destinations, should the striker leave Newcastle United this summer.

Isak grabbed his 23rd goal of the season last time out as the Magpies beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, ending the club's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

However, the prolific 25-year-old has been the centre of much transfer speculation this season, with top clubs such as Liverpool and Arsenal being linked.

During a discussion on the It's Called Soccer podcast between Neville, Rebecca Lowe and Jamie Carragher, the former United captain chimed in after Lowe asked Carragher where Isak's next destination could be, with the presenter name checking the Premier League's current top two sides.

Neville held up his hand to interrupt and simply said "United", throwing his former club into the mix.

The ex-Red Devils captain's interjection came after he had previously said that Isak will want to play at one football's biggest clubs, as it's "natural".

"The reality is Newcastle are a great football club and we didn't see that any more as we did on Sunday [at the Carabao Cup final]," Neville said.

"But they will want to play for the Real Madrids, Liverpools, Manchester Uniteds and Bayern Munichs of this world, it's just natural that these players will want to play at those clubs at some point, if they can."

However, Carragher disagreed with Neville, insisting that the Gunners and Arne Slot's team are the most realistic candidates for Isak.

"I think the only two options at the moment would be Arsenal and Liverpool as they're both sort of crying out for a striker," Carragher said, before he expressed doubts of how feasible a deal to prise Isak away would be.

"I just look at how long he's got left on his deal and the ball is in Newcastle's court, it's not really in Isak's.

I think the club will say: 'No, do another 12 months and in a year's time we can make a few quid and you can move on'."

While Neville insisted United should be in the transfer tug-of-war for Isak, it's looking likely that Ruben Amorim will target Isak's Swedish striking partner and his former forward at Sporting CP, Viktor Gyokeres, instead.

Amorim signed Gyokeres for Sporting from Coventry City in the summer of 2023 and helped the Swedish international become one of the most prolific forwards in European football.

Swedish national team boss Jon Dahl Tomasson is also confident Gyokeres has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

Him and Isak are two quite different players, but they’re both world-class strikers.”
