Trent Alexander-Arnold’s emotional celebration and evasive post-match interview have intensified speculation about his potential summer move to Real Madrid, even as his late winner against Leicester City edged Liverpool closer to a historic 20th Premier League title.
Alexander-Arnold’s 76th-minute strike—the first left-footed strike of his career—sealed a 1-0 victory at Leicester, leaving Liverpool requiring just one win to clinch the title.
His shirt-off celebration met with roaring chants from the travelling fans, gave the Reds something to cheer about but also raised eyebrows given his unresolved future.
The defender’s contract expires in June, and his reluctance to engage in renewal talks contrasts sharply with teammates Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who recently extended their deals.
Manager Arne Slot sidestepped direct questions about Alexander-Arnold’s future, instead praising his commitment: “It’s ridiculous to question his dedication.
Social media reactions mirrored this resignation.
Now Gary Neville has had his say on proceedings.
Speaking on his own Sky Sports podcast, the Manchester United legend feels time is running out for Alexander-Arnold to be honest with the supporters – and feels official communication from Alexander-Arnold himself should be forthcoming in the next week or so:
“There’s going to come a point – probably in about seven days’ time – around this time next Sunday whereby he’s going to have nowhere else to go because the season will be over for Liverpool – in essence,” Neville said.
“There will be nothing else to talk about other than whether he is staying at the club – or not – and he’ll then have to say yes or no.”
“He’ll have to get himself sorted this week because, once you start leaving it beyond next weekend when you’ve won the league, it becomes a little bit distasteful.
You’re better off just declaring your hand, at that point, and just say; ‘Yes I’m staying, or no I’m not’.”
As Liverpool approaches title confirmation, Alexander-Arnold’s legacy hangs in balance?
A farewell at Anfield next Sunday could well be worth bracing for.
