Arne Slot says he is delighted to see Dominik Szoboszlai get the wider credit his Liverpool performances deserve after the midfielder opened the scoring in a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Having struck at Manchester City on Sunday to help seal a first win at the Etihad for 10 years, the Hungary captain fired in his eighth of the campaign when his left-footed effort beat Nick Pope at Anfield as the Reds beat the Magpies to go 13 clear in the Premier League title race.

Alexis Mac Allister added a second after half time and Slot says he has been impressed with the work rate of former RB Leipzig midfielder Szoboszlai all season and is pleased to see the tireless midfielder earn more recognition for his all-round displays.

"I am very pleased for him because he is the type of player that always looks for a team-mate in a better position than him," Slot said.

"If he has a chance and that is also what you saw against Villa, when he played that ball square to Darwin (Nunez).

"So for him to be on the scoresheet now, for a player as humble as him when he has a chance but especially for the unbelievable work he does for the team.

Probably he gets the credit now even more for the people who are judging players not only on work rate but also goals and assists.

"I think they (the midfield trio) have improved but if I tell you now that they didn't improve and no-one has, then I would say I give myself a lot of criticism.

No, no, they have put so much work in and they work so well together and I think they did improve.

"I think if you wear the Liverpool shirt as a midfielder you should score goals, maybe except as a 6 but an 8 or 10, they should provide goals as well, when needed.

But it has not always been needed to provide the assists, but today, they showed up and we depended on goals from them."

Slot, who watched the game from the directors' box as he served the first of a two-game ban after his sending-off against Everton, added: "Is it less stressful or more from the stands?
