'Good player': Bill Shankly once explained why he actually 'felt sorry' for Man United legend George Best

Liverpool’s rivalry with Manchester United is one of the greatest in English football.

These days, the Reds are reigning superior over their rivals from Old Trafford and look set to match their record of 20 league titles in May.

But as much as Liverpool supporters will laud that probable achievement, many will also recognise just how good United have been over the years, too.

Some of the greatest players in football history have walked through the doors at Old Trafford, and few have done so with as much grace as George Best.

During his 11 years at Man United, Best played against Liverpool 20 times.

On each of those occasions, Bill Shankly was the Liverpool manager.

But even as Best picked up two league titles and a European Cup as Shankly watched on, perhaps the greatest figure in all Liverpool history proclaimed that he ‘felt sorry’ for the Northern Irishman.

Best is widely seen as being one of the very first superstar footballers.

With his movie star good looks and easy-on-the-eye style of play, he became a household name across the country.

This led to Best becoming a celebrity in his own right away from the football field.

And as Shankly admitted during an interview back in 1976, he did not envy the way every move the then Los Angeles Aztecs player made was publicised.

“He’s a victim of circumstances, George Best,” said the legendary Scotsman.

He’s a good looking boy, he’s a good player, he’s in-front of the public, they’re all after him!”

Shankly and Best were two great rivals during their time with their respective clubs, with United and Liverpool vying for honours in the 1960’s and 70’s.

When Best made his debut for United aged 17 in 1963, Shankly had already been at Anfield for four years.

The former Huddersfield Town manager would go on to spend a further 11 years with the Reds before retiring in 1974.

During his time at Liverpool, Shankly won three First Division titles, two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup.

As for Best, he spent 11 years in the United first-team, also leaving in 1974.

The silky winger won two First Division titles and the European Cup with the Red Devils.
