Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness took a retrospective look over his fabled Reds career as he revealed his seven years as a player on Merseyside went "too quickly" - and how Bob Paisley and his staff saw the league as the "most important" trophy to win.

A true authority voice among his peers, the veteran figure enjoyed two storied spells with the Reds in total - both in the dugout and on the hallowed turf at Anfield.

Joining Liverpool back in 1978, Souness won the league championship on five occasions, as well as lifting three European Cups.



Winning the European Cup in their first season together on Merseyside, their leadership ushered in an era of domestic and continental domination that has seldom been witnessed in the English game.

Recalling his volley against the Toffees in the first-ever All-Merseyside showpiece, he said: "I don’t think about them on a regular basis but occasionally a clip comes on the telly or someone sends me something on YouTube."

The former midfield general lifted three trophies that season, as Liverpool clinched the first treble in English football history, as they also won the league and European Cup.

Having won five league titles at Liverpool, Souness revealed how a winning culture was instilled by managers Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan and coach Ronnie Moran.
