West Ham United boss Graham Potter questioned the validity of Liverpool’s winning goal after a dramatic finale at Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk headed home a corner from Alexis Mac Allister in the 89th minute to earn the Reds a 2-1 win in their Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon.

West Ham, though, claimed Lucas Paqueta had been fouled by Mac Allister before the Argentina international’s shot was turned around by visiting goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to concede the decisive set-piece.

And asked if the Liverpool midfielder should have been penalised, Potter said: “That’s the million dollar question.

“The performance of the team was really positive, probably the best and most positive during my time here against the best team, the top team (in the Premier League) in an emotional environment, which was understandable.

“Liverpool started really well with intensity, they pushed us back and made it difficult.

We showed resilience, which hasn’t always there.

“We grew into the game, the crowd here are very knowledgeable and knew they were in a game and the way their second goal was indication of that.”

West Ham started with 19-year-old Oliver Scarles at left-back up against Mohamed Salah, with the teenager given a torrid time by the Liverpool winger before being replaced during the second half.

And Potter added: “He was playing against the best player in terms of goals and assists in the world at the moment.

He won’t face that kind of player every day, it was a great education for him and I'm glad he stuck at it

“There were a lot of strong individual performances which suggests the team was playing well.

“Points-wise we haven’t got the points we would like.

You could look at the context of that, for 25 games before (Potter arrived) we conceded 57 goals which is more than two a game.
