Liverpool have more than 16 senior players on international duty this month with an update on Harvey Elliott and his injury emerging this week.
Elliott was forced to receive medical assistance after being on the receiving end of what many described as a “rugby tackle” from Newcastle midfielder Joelinton during Liverpool’s 2-1 loss at Wembley.
The challenge, which occurred in the 11th minute of stoppage time, saw Joelinton haul Elliott down by the neck while scraping both of his ankles in two separate lunges.
Despite VAR reportedly reviewing the incident, no red card was issued.
The severity of the challenge was evident as Elliott required assistance from Liverpool’s medical staff to leave the pitch after the final whistle.
Concerning footage shared by journalists showed the midfielder limping through the mixed zone, unable to make his way independently to the bench.
The Carabao Cup final incident is not the first injury concern Elliott has faced this season.
In September 2024, the midfielder suffered a fractured foot while on international duty with England’s U21’s, causing him to miss around six weeks of action.
That injury ruled Elliott out until late October, causing him to miss seven crucial games across three different competitions during the opening stages of Slot’s tenure at Anfield.
This adds to a very frustrating campaign for the 21-year-old, who has been afforded just four starts in all competitions of which none have come in the Premier League.
But luckily for him and Liverpool, the knock he picked up at Wembley does not seem to be too bad.
That’s because Merseyside reporter Lewis Steele has revealed that Elliott has been partaking in full England U21 training this week
“Harvey Elliott training with England Under 21s today after nasty injury at end of Carabao Cup final saw him limp on to the team bus,” he wrote on X.
This suggests that the affliction does not threaten to cause him to miss further Liverpool games while we wait for official confirmation.
England Under-21s will face France in a friendly match on Friday, March 21, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm?
They will then host Portugal in another friendly fixture on Monday, March 24, kicking off at 7.45pm.
