Harvey Elliott has spoken about the impact former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp had on him and the team and the details of the meeting he held with players to announce his departure.

Klopp sent shockwaves around Europe when he announced a few months before the end of the season that he would leave Liverpool at the end of last season.

The German manager was in his ninth season at the club and was leading the club to a possible treble that season.

As a result, the thought of him leaving was considered a distant possibility, also because he had signed a new contract the previous season.

However, Klopp announced he was set to leave the club, citing burnout as a reason.

Like many Liverpool fans, Eliott, who was signed by Klopp from Fulham in 2019, was stunned to learn that the man who handed him his debut at the club was leaving.

The midfielder has revealed the reaction of he and his teammates when Klopp told them about his decision to leave.

“It was a really strange situation,” Elliott told Amazon Prime video.

“Jurgen wasn’t really one for having meetings after a game.

It felt like the whole building was quiet because we didn’t know how to take the news.

“Up until he left, it was strange trying to get your head around the fact he was leaving.”

Arne Slot was tasked with succeeding a club legend when he took over as Liverpool boss at the start of this season.

The Dutchman was somewhat expected to struggle early on.

However, he has hit the ground running, and his team is on the brink of securing the Premier League title—holding a 12-point lead over second-place Arsenal.

Elliott also believes that Klopp laid the groundwork for this season’s success and that the German’s contribution to the club deserves to be marked by a statue.

“The players, the fans, everyone in this building and around the world feels together and I think that’s because of him,” Elliott said.

“I’m surprised there isn’t a statue of him yet.

Even after I’m dead, it will go on.

“He deserves it for what he has done for this team, made it like a family.

He is a legend in my eyes and will be a legend at this club forever.”
