Trent Alexander-Arnold looks set to leave Liverpool this summer.

The Reds’ right-back is out of contract with the Merseyside club at the end of the season and the 26-year-old is not expected to sign a new deal with the Premier League leaders.

It was reported this week that Alexander-Arnold will join Real Madrid for the 2025/26 campaign as the La Liga champions have shown an interest in the full-back for some time and have made the England star one of their top targets for the summer.

This has sparked a lot of debate and discussion in England as a result with pundits and fans voicing their opinions and theories on the Liverpool vice-captain.

Former Liverpool star Stephen Warnock has now added to this as the BBC pundit has stated that there could be another twist in the saga.

Sky Sports’ Melissa Reddy reported on Friday that Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold were left surprised by this week’s news of the Liverpool star agreeing to move to Spain as nothing has changed in the saga since January.

This was a twist in the story and off the back of this, Warnock thinks Alexander-Arnold could remain at Anfield and has detailed how Liverpool could keep the full-back ahead of next season.

“I think there’s still that element where he’s almost going: ‘if you want me, you’re gonna have to pay for me’.

“If you think of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, their salaries are astronomical at the moment.

Because Trent is a local lad, he won’t be on the type of money they’re on, and he will be thinking, ‘pay me what they’re getting paid’, and it might be a case of just closing that gap to enable that to happen.”

It is unclear what is happening behind the scenes when it comes to the negotiations over a new contract for Alexander-Arnold, but this is likely a tactic Liverpool have already tried with the 26-year-old defender.
