Alisson Becker has delivered his verdict on who should win the Ballon D’or this year.
The Liverpool shot stopper is currently competing at Copa America where he has started both of Brazil’s group stage games so far.
Plenty has already been said on Brazil and their perceived underperformances heading into the tournament.
Even Brazil legends like Ronaldinho were publicly calling out the national team for their lack of spirit and entertainment.
Meanwhile for Alisson, it’s a welcome return to being No.1 for Brazil after seeing Manchester City’s Ederson take the spot after the Qatar World Cup.
The City ‘keeper is currently nursing an eyebrow fracture for this tournament.
Alisson began the tournament with a solid performance in Brazil’s opening match against Costa Rica.
The match ended in a 0-0 draw, but Alisson kept a clean sheet.
His accurate distribution and command of the penalty area were key highlights, with Brazilian media praising his performance despite the team’s lackluster attack.
However, Brazil eased pressure and silenced critics with a 4-1 win over Paraguay in their Group D clash this past Saturday, with Real Madrid man Vinicius Junior scoring two of the four on the night.
Brazil and Colombia face each other in the early hours of this coming morning to determine the winner of Group D.
What did Alisson Becker say about the Ballon D’or?
Speaking in his pre-Colombia press conference, the Liverpool shot stopper revealed that compatriot Vinicius Junior should win the Ballon D’or in October this year:
“The last game (against Paraguay) was a demonstration of what he can do, the 31-year-old began via Madrid Universal.
“We know the ability he has, what he has done this season?
He is worthy of being awarded as the best in the world.”
Many Liverpool fans aren’t particularly fond of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.
The Brazilian winger boasts an impressive record in the Champions League against English clubs, especially Liverpool.
Vinicius has tallied seven goals and eight assists in 16 appearances against Premier League teams.
Liverpool, in particular, has been on the receiving end of his talent, with Vinicius scoring five goals and providing two assists against Klopp’s side.
Alisson also spoke about Luis Diaz and the threat that Colombia pose, saying:
“He is a player who is going strong,” the ‘keeper acknowledged.
“But we not only need to neutralize a single player, but a whole very strong team, such as Colombia, which is experiencing a very good moment of confidence.”
Brazil take on Colombia at 2am BST at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California later this evening.
