Liverpool’s summer of 2023 will go down as one of the best in the club’s recent history.

The Reds did some remarkable work in the transfer market, totally transforming their midfield department.

Out went Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner, in came a new quartet who have since gone on to have successful Liverpool careers of their own.

But while excitement was abound over the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo, the exit of Henderson in particular left a bitter taste in the mouth.

Captain of eight years and an important player for another four, Henderson leaving for Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq undoubtedly soured his legacy at Anfield.

Just months into his stay in the Middle East, the former captain pushed to leave, ending up at Ajax.

And one year on from his Dutch adventure beginning, Henderson now looks set to bring it to a close with yet another transfer.

Henderson’s arrival in Ajax was heralded last January.

The Dutch club were delighted by the capture of a Champions League and Premier League-winning captain.

Ajax had been at a low ebb, with Henderson contributing 12 appearances as the Amsterdam side finished a disappointing fifth.

This season, under exciting young coach Francesco Farioli, things have been better and Ajax sit in second place in the Eredivisie, just four points from leaders PSV Eindhoven with a game in hand.

Henderson has been a key player, featuring in 17 of their 20 league fixtures.

But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 34-year-old is surprisingly on the move this winter.

Taking to X on Thursday afternoon, Romano reports that Henderson is all set to join Ligue 1 side Monaco.

“AS Monaco are closing in on deal to sign Jordan Henderson from Ajax as new midfielder!” says the transfer expert.

Here we go, soon.”

This has seemingly come out of nowhere and would be an incredibly interesting move for Henderson.

However, according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, the transfer may not be as close as Romano is reporting.

They claim that Ajax actually see Henderson as being ‘too important’ to their title battle with PSV and are blocking Monaco’s request to sign him.

It remains to be seen whether Ajax will relent, but if the veteran does make his way to Monaco, then he could end up having a Champions League reunion with Liverpool.

Adi Hutter’s team are one of four possible opponents for the Reds in the last-16 of the competition this season.

An Anfield return could therefore be on the cards for Henderson, but it seems a lot has to fall into place before that even has the possibility of happening.
