Liverpool are yet to make a summer signing and Jamie Carragher wishes that the Reds had pounced for one of Chelsea’s new boys.

Arne Slot is truly up and running as Liverpool manager having taken charge of his first Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds headed away to Portman Road to take on newly-promoted Ipswich Town in the first lunchtime kickoff of the new campaign.

Liverpool were flat in the first half and looked like they may have problems with this potential banana skin of a fixture.

Slot tweaked things at the break though and Liverpool were much better in the second half, running out 2-0 winners in Suffolk.

Slot will have been desperate to get off to a positive start as Liverpool boss and he can now look ahead to this weekend’s home clash with Brentford.

Liverpool fans are though keen to see new signings arrive.

The Reds have yet to strike an incoming deal and there is already pressure mounting on new transfer chief Richard Hughes.

Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi has snubbed a move to Anfield as Liverpool chase a new holding midfield player.

Whether Liverpool move for other targets remains to be seen but there is a strong chance that Liverpool end the summer without a new face.

That won’t go down well with some fans and pundit Jamie Carragher has now named one player he wishes Liverpool had signed.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher picked out Chelsea winger Pedro Neto as his impact signing of the season.

Chelsea signed Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £54million move this summer and he made his debut on Sunday.

Paul Merson thinks that Arsenal should have signed Neto and Carragher has now suggested similar from a Liverpool perspective.

Carragher noted that he has loved watching Neto at Wolves in recent years and would have loved to see him arrive at Anfield.

Carragher praised the pace and quality on the ball from Neto, suggesting that he is a ‘special’ player when he avoids injuries.

“The reason I have chosen him is because I think, but for injuries, I think this is a player that could play for the best teams in the world – I really do believe that,” said Carragher.

“And he is a player I have always watched for Wolves in the last sort of three or four years, who I have always thought… ‘I would love Liverpool to sign him’.

I just look at the pace and the quality on the ball, he scores goals, and I just hope he stays fit.”

“I think if Chelsea could keep him feet, I think he’s a special talent and he’s a player that I love to watch and I actually get down a little bit when I hear he’s injured again,” he added.

Liverpool may need to have wingers in mind for upcoming transfer windows.

Mohamed Salah is inside the final year of his contract and has been the subject of major Saudi Arabian interest.

On the left side, Luis Diaz has been targeted by Barcelona this summer and his long-term future is far from secure.

Cody Gakpo is viewed as a winger by Slot, at least according to Gakpo himself, but Liverpool have eyed one winger this summer.

Liverpool wanted Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United according to Amanda Staveley but just couldn’t get a deal done.

Gordon may remain on the Liverpool wish list and many fans may actually prefer him to Neto.

Not only is Gordon more durable than Neto – at least so far in his career – but he is also a boyhood Liverpool fan.

Neto may well excel for Chelsea but Liverpool will have look elsewhere if they want a winger moving forward with Gordon surely remaining on the radar.
