Arne Slot was today forced to watch a second and final Liverpool Premier League game from the stands as punishment for his sending off at the end of the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park against Everton.

And, for the Reds players in the first half, perhaps it was for the best.

As Mohamed Salah, who was once against Liverpool's match-winner, revealed that Slot was far from happy after he made his way down to the dressing room at half-time in the home clash with Southampton.

Despite being marooned at the bottom of the table, the Saints led at the break thanks to Will Smallbone's goal in first-half stoppage time.

And the Reds head coach certainly let his feelings be known before making a triple substitution that helped inspire a second-half fightback.

After Darwin Nunez restored parity, Salah scored twice from the penalty spot to seal a 3-1 win that moved Liverpool 16 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who do have two games in hand.

The table-topping Reds will now turn their focus back to the Champions League.

They welcome Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield on Tuesday looked to maintain or build on their 1-0 first-leg lead.

But Salah admitted that Slot was not pleased with what he saw in the opening period against Southampton.

"A bit of frustration," said Salah.

"The manager, his head, was like going for us - but that’s something you need sometimes.

"Because first half, the game was sloppy, we just were slow and taking our time and in the last minute they managed to (go ahead in) the game.

Maybe second half we played a little bit better, but first half we didn’t play well at all.

"But if you want to win the Champions League or the Premier League, you have to win those kinds of games."

Salah's brace moved him further clear at the top of this season's Premier League scoring charts on 25 - five more than Manchester City's Erling Haaland.

It also moved him level with another City legend, Sergio Aguero, into joint-fifth on the all-time Premier League scorers list with 184 goals.

Salah said: "I knew about the record but I didn’t think about it while I was playing.

It’s a good record to be equalising; Sergio is a great player, he was a legend here for the league.

"So I’m happy about that and I’m happy about the win as well."
