The summer transfer window might be over but it's likely that speculation regarding Liverpool and a number of potential targets will continue until January.

The Reds might have secured deals for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa and Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili last week, with the latter set to remain in Spain until 2025, but there was a host who they supposedly missed out on.

Arne Slot was keen to sign a new defensive midfielder, while a center-back was also near the top of the priority list following Joel Matip's departure at the end of the last campaign - yet neither role was improved.

From the dramatic transfer saga involving Martin Zubimendi to the missed opportunity to sign Anthony Gordon, Liverpool.com takes a look at five players who the Reds were linked with and how they've fared so far this season.

Martin Zubimendi

The main star of Liverpool's summer transfer window, Real Sociedad midfielder Zubimendi was eyed as the primary target by Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes to fill the No.6 void in the Dutchman's team.

He was actually named on the bench for their league opener against Rayo Vallecano on August 18, yet came off the bench to score in the 2-1 defeat.

Since then, Zubimendi has started and played the full 90 minutes in the following three games, producing a win, a loss and a draw, leaving Real Sociedad in 12th place ahead of the international break.

As it happened, there was eventually no need to sell the 23-year-old for Eddie Howe's side.

As expected, however, Gordon had been Newcastle's main man on the left wing in the first two games of the campaign against Southampton and Bournemouth, scoring a late equalizer against the latter in a 1-1 draw, before switching to the right for last weekend's 2-1 victory over Tottenham.

Gordon was also used as a second-half substitute in the Carabao Cup second round penalty shoot-out victory away to Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest on August 28, successfully converting his spot-kick to help his side progress to the next round.

Viktor Gyokeres

The first of two Sporting CP players linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, former Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres has picked up where he left off last season with seven goals and three assists in five games for the Portuguese champions in the current campaign.

After providing two assists in Sporting's chaotic 4-3 defeat to Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup on August 8, in which his side lead 3-0 after 24 minutes, the 26-year-old went on to score in the first four league games of the season as his side picked up a maximum of 12 points.

Gyokeres scored and assisted in the opening day victory over Rio Ave (3-1) before grabbing a brace against Nacional (6-1) in the following game.

Goncalo Inacio

Like his Sporting CP teammate, Portuguese defender Goncalo Inacio also found himself linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, having impressed for club and country during the 2023-24 campaign

However, the 23-year-old's $67million (£51m/€60m) release clause was reportedly too much for the Reds to pay upfront.

However, Inacio has already shown why Liverpool should have perhaps gone all out for his services in the early part of the season, having played a big part in helping the Primeira Liga champions sit top of the table after its first four games.

Inacio actually scored Sporting's opener in the humiliating 4-3 Supertaca defeat to Porto last month, but has played the full 90 minutes in the four league games since, which includes clean sheets in the last two fixtures against Farense and Porto - providing two assists against the former.

Baris Alper Yilmaz

Following an impressive Euro 2024 with Turkey, Galatasaray winger Baris Alper Yilmaz became linked with a number of Europe's top clubs this summer - including Liverpool

Since then, however, Yilmaz has made a good start to the 2024-25 campaign with the Turkish Super Lig champions, scoring in recent away victories to Konyaspor (2-1) and Adana Demirspor (5-1) to leave Gala top of the table after three wins from three.

He was unfortunately part of the side that lost 5-0 to Besiktas in the Turkish Super Cup and 4-2 to Young Boys in the Champions League play-off round, meaning it will be Europa League football this season for Turkey's reigning champions, but two goals in his first three league games is still something to shout about.
