From the outset Arne Slot’s straightforward journey to the Premier League title has been a model of calmness and control, featuring little of the visceral, organised chaos that defined Jurgen Klopp ’s winning team.
There have been a couple of hammerings - the three and five nil wins away to dire Manchester United and West Ham stand out - but for the most part this group have appeared to ease to the championship by simply being more competent than their rivals.
It was obvious from early on that Slot’s side would seek to be more possession-based.
Except many of the statistics are not just at odds with the narrative of Slot’s team being less adventurous, they suggest a looser grasp of games.
Klopp’s title winners averaged 62.9 per cent possession compared to Slot’s team having 57.8 per cent of the ball and the current group are passing the ball far less but with a higher completion rate.
Slot’s team shoot slightly more per game, though Klopp’s group put a greater number on target.

The expected numbers show that Slot’s team have created far more and coughed up significantly fewer big chances.
The Klopp team ended up with an xG for of 68.9 (1.81 per game) and an xG against of 37.7 (0.99 per game).
After 32 matches Slot’s side had already surpassed the attacking number by clocking up 69.7.
It now stands at 74.3 (2.18 per game) and their against number is just 28.9 (0.85 per game).
There has been more of a reliance on Mohamed Salah, who has contributed more than a third of the goals under Slot but produced a little more than a fifth in Klopp’s side which also featured Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

And for some coaches, including Aston Villa ’s Unai Emery, this current side is “even better” than what went before.
