Liverpool did what they had to do at the King Power Stadium — win.
A 1-0 result against Leicester City means they’ve moved within three points of officially sealing the Premier League title.
The goal came late, but it was enough.
The Reds had plenty of chances.
They just didn’t take them.
Still, the result was what mattered.
They’re now 13 points clear of Arsenal with five games to go.
And even though fans were hoping to celebrate the title on Sunday, Arsenal’s result at Ipswich delayed that.
But there’s good news.
Liverpool may not need to wait until the Tottenham game at Anfield.
The title could be wrapped up even earlier.
There’s one scenario that would make it possible — and all eyes will be on a midweek fixture in North London.
Here’s how it can happen: Arsenal play Crystal Palace on Wednesday night in a rescheduled game.
If the Gunners lose, they will only be able to reach 84 points.
Liverpool are already on 85.
That would make it mathematically impossible for Arsenal to catch up — meaning Liverpool would be champions before they even face Spurs on Sunday.
That’s why Wednesday is key.
Speaking after the Leicester match, Arne Slot acknowledged how close his side is to the finish line.
“We’re all looking forward to that game,” he said about the upcoming clash with Tottenham.
“Always when we play at home, we look forward to it?
But we’ve already played Tottenham a few times and we know they can make it very difficult for us.
“They’re a good team, they have all their injured players back, they’re still playing for something in Europe as well.”
“But I’m looking forward to it because I assume our fans will be loud on Sunday.”
On the Leicester win, Slot admitted it could have been wrapped up earlier.
“I think we created two very big chances in the first five minutes, in the first 15-20 minutes of the second half we created chance after chance, in my opinion.
“Since I’ve been here I don’t think we played a game where we’ve had so many big chances and didn’t score one of them.”
“In the end we needed a set piece to score, which wasn’t a big chance, but a great finish from Trent.”
Now, the focus shifts to Wednesday.
If Crystal Palace can do Liverpool a favour at the Emirates, the wait is over.
