'How it is': Thierry Henry shares why he now has 'respect' for two Liverpool players after PSG loss

Liverpool’s first European adventure under Arne Slot came to a disappointing end as PSG eliminated the Reds via penalties.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was the hero of the night for the Parisian giants as the Italian international denied Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones from the spot with PSG scoring all of their penalties to book their spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

With Liverpool fans never confident that Nunez was going to score his penalty, allowing the Uruguayan international to take one of the five kicks was perhaps a mistake given that the striker’s attempt was easily saved by Donnarumma.

Yet Thierry Henry has come to the defence of Nunez and Jones for making the decision to volunteer as penalty takers for Liverpool.

Speaking on CBS Sports after PSG’s penalty shootout win, the Premier League legend shared his admiration for Nunez and Jones being willing to step up for Liverpool to take a penalty against PSG, even if the pair both missed.

Indeed, it was a real night to forget for the Anfield side, with Luis Diaz slated for his performance in attack for Liverpool as Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced off after injuring his ankle in the second-half.

Yet despite the shortcomings from Liverpool, Henry believes Nunez and Jones deserve respect for being brave enough to step up and to take a penalty for the hosts despite the duo being the reason behind PSG’s progression.

Henry said: “It’s tough, but I always say to people that if you want to take the penalty, I will respect you always, because to go there and take it, you have my respect.

You’re going to miss some, that’s just how it is, Donnarumma guessed the right side twice.”

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES

Nunez has been teasing a turnaround at Liverpool for some time, with the striker looking good in recent weeks and coming up with some big moments against the likes of Brentford and more recently Southampton in the Premier League.

And PSG was billed as the game where Nunez would finally realise his potential, yet the reality could not have been further from the truth, with the striker more-or-less putting the nail in his own coffin on his Liverpool career.

Indeed, Nunez’s Liverpool future is up in the air heading into the summer, and missing a key penalty in one of the biggest matches of the season will do little to convince the likes of Arne Slot to keep the striker around.
