Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has insisted that he can't remember a time when he was criticised in a similar manner to how Darwin Nunez was by Arne Slot following the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

The Uruguayan missed a close-range sitter in the west Midlands as Liverpool dropped points in the title race.

In his post-match interview, Slot was asked about the miss by Nunez but instead of criticising him for the chance that went begging, the Dutchman turned his attention to the forward's attitude.

He was too disappointed he missed that chance.

"Maybe we will never know but maybe that was why he was just a fraction short the moment afterwards [when Emi Martinez won the ball]." Reflecting on the performance of Nunez and Slot's comments, Shearer told Betfair that he understood the Liverpool boss' frustrations post-match.

"I don’t know Darwin Nunez as an individual, but I understand the manager being frustrated with him, because of the chances he misses," the Match of the Day pundit explained.

Even if the manager wasn’t moaning about that, then he’s got every right to moan about the chance that he missed, because he missed a big one.

"It’s not often you see that sort of thing from a manager, but I don’t know what’s gone on behind the scenes before, or if anything has gone on in the dressing room which we don’t know about.

Maybe he doesn’t like what he’s seen from Nunez in training and is trying to get a response out of him.

"I can’t remember a time, if any, where a manager would have criticised my attitude or work-rate.

It remains to be seen if Nunez will start but he did post a picture of his No.9 jersey on social media this Friday.
