Stan Collymore didn't have a personal relationship with Robbie Fowler despite forming a legendary goal-scoring duo for Liverpool.

The now 54-year-old stepped into the team in 1995, taking the place of 'God', as Fowler was affectionately called by Reds fans, despite his stunning 31-goal haul from the previous season.

"But I always felt there was a sort of...

"When I made my Liverpool debut, Robbie Fowler had scored like 34 goals in the season before, but I actually made my Liverpool debut and played my first few games with Ian Rush.

Collymore also reflected on how important their partnership was during their two-year stint together at Anfield.

He added: "And on it, I think it was 105 goals and assists over the two seasons, so it was a very prolific partnership.

I think Liverpool got as strained as it got in terms of, like I say, that relationship with Robbie - which was fine on the pitch, we just never seemed to gel off it."

Collymore's challenges weren't limited to his team dynamics at Liverpool, though - he also shared a lack of rapport with fellow striker Alan Shearer during their time with England(

I think that there always is a little bit of push and pull - famously Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham didn't get on."

Collymore opined that goal scorers naturally have egos which lead to competition, explaining: "I think that when you score goals, and goal scorers have to have some sort of ego, I think that you're always thinking, 'I want to be better than them, and I'm going to do everything I can do to be better than them'.

"So I think that that always provides a healthy tension, as long as there's goals going in on the pitch, it really doesn't matter if you get on with somebody on or off the pitch.

And like I say, 105 or 106 goals between Robbie and I, we really didn't need to be best mates."

Fowler ascended the ranks at Anfield in 1993 and gave eight solid years to the club before his switch to Leeds United.
