Giorgi Mamardashvili is enduring a difficult final season at Valencia.

The Georgia international will join Liverpool in the summer, after the Reds agreed a £29m deal with the La Liga outfit back in August.

The 24-year-old had been a star performer for his country during Euro 2024, with his performances last season also leading to the shot-stopper being shortlisted for the Yashin trophy.

However, he has come under-fire at Valencia in recent weeks as Los Che continue to struggle.

They currently find themselves 18th in La Liga and are in the relegation zone on goal-difference alone.

Boasting the second worst defence in the Spanish top-flight, having conceded 44 goals, it is perhaps no surprise that Mamardashvili’s performances have come under question in Spain, ahead of his move to Liverpool.

He missed four matches at the turn of the year with a leg injury, but since his return to the side, he has found himself the subject of even greater scrutiny.

Valencia have actually only lost two times with Mamardashvili in goal since his return, but that includes a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona at Camp Nou and a 3-0 loss to Atletico Madrid late last month.

Considering Barcelona and Atletico are first and second in La Liga, there should perhaps be little shame in losing to two of Spain’s fiercest sides - even when beaten comfortably.

But a 3-3 draw away at mid-table Osasuna has not gone down particularly well, even though Umar Sadiq rescued a late draw, given the fact that Valencia twice led.

Mamardashvili has been criticised for failing to stop both of Aimar Oroz’s goals, while he was also unable to keep out an Ante Budimir penalty.

He will at least feel he could have done better when beaten by a scruffy volley into the ground from Oroz from the edge of the box.

Coach Carlos Corberan was questioned about the Georgian’s form after the draw, and while he refused to criticise Mamardashvili publicly, he seemed to cryptically suggest that the Liverpool-bound goalkeeper had been below-par.

“I don't like to publicly evaluate individual performances,” he said.

“We compensate for any performances below the usual level of our players with a lot of work.”

It would appear that Mamardashvili is not living up to the eye-catching performances of last season as Spanish media continues to criticise him.

But with Valencia enduring a dismal campaign and embroiled in a relegation battle, blame should not fall at the feet of the goalkeeper alone with it curious how his performances would be perceived if he had not already agreed to join Liverpool in the summer.
