Former Aston Villa star Martin Keown believes Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard deserves another chance in management in England despite his recent struggles

Steven Gerrard deserves another chance at management in England according to his former England team-mate, Martin Keown.

The Liverpool legend is currently facing increasing pressure in charge of Ettifaq, and was booed off the pitch by supporters following a 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Al Qadisiyah in the Saudi Pro League.

The loss left Gerrard’s side 11th in the table and was their fourth in six games, following on from a shock 3-1 loss to lower-league Al-Jabalain in the King’s Cup.

Ettifaq now haven’t won a Saudi Pro League game for two months, with supporters turning on the former Reds star as a result.

Gerrard has won just 17 of his 47 games to date in the Gulf State, and should he be dismissed, it would mark his second-successive sacking after losing his job following a difficult stint in charge of Aston Villa.

The Villans have since been transformed by his successor, Unai Emery, to the extent that they currently sit top of the Champions League league table.

But despite Gerrard’s struggles at both Villa Park and Ettifaq, former Aston Villa star Keown shared his high hopes for the Liverpool legend and remained adamant that the former midfielder is worthy of another managerial chance in England - even if his time in Saudi Arabia indeed ends in tears.

"Well, I suppose you have to make it count when you're on these shores, don't you?" Keown said on talkSPORT's White and Jordan.

“I had high hopes for Steven Gerrard to become a top manager.

I think he's due another chance, Jim, when he comes back to the UK.

"I just felt that there was an empathy with him.

He wants it to work.

"He looked like he was destined along with Frank Lampard.

I think if those two would have trained on and done what we expected them to do, then they probably would be managing their country right now.

"But the other side of the coin is he could well lose his job now in Saudi Arabia.
