Whether they loyally stayed like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, opted for pastures new with Real Madrid like Steve McManaman and Michael Owen, or were forced out like Robbie Fowler, the Reds were always scrambling in an attempt to reclaim their place amongst European football’s elite when such players were in their ranks.
It’s one thing being tempted by greater prizes elsewhere, but another matter entirely when they are already on offer to you at Anfield.
While Liverpool’s homegrown stars of yesteryear might not be able to relate entirely, it is perhaps a different story for some of their foreign contingent.
Mamadou Sakho was only 23 years old when he joined the Reds in an £18m deal from his boyhood club, Paris Saint-Germain, in September 2013.

“I think he showed straight away in his first season, like we went to the final in the Europa League and also we did well in the league.”
Sakho would ultimately never win a trophy during his time with Liverpool, though the Reds reached both the League Cup final and Europa League final in 2016 following Klopp’s arrival.
The Frenchman started the former but was forced off after 25 minutes, having suffered a head injury, with Sakho revealing his frustration at having to come off as Liverpool went on to lose to Man City on penalties.
“I was so sad.
But I think at that time he also remembered me at the training because I think I wasn't an easy defender to play against!
“And yeah, we had a few good battles.
