That will be no different this year at Liverpool.
With so many of the first-team squad away, what is and is not different at Anfield may not become clear for some time.
However, as those bigger-hitters wait to arrive, some more fringe members of the Liverpool team need to take their chance to impress Slot.

It’s inarguable that those who have been at the AXA Training Centre since day one of Slot’s reign have found themselves at an advantage against some of their teammates.
Obviously, there are certain players who are still shoo-ins to the Dutch coach’s starting XI.

Virgil van Dijk, for example, is not in any kind of danger of losing his place at centre-back despite being slated to arrive just two weeks before the start of the season.
Another who is virtually certain to retain his spot without having worked with Slot for much time at all is Alisson Becker.

With Alisson away – and third choice Adrian having left – Kelleher has been the senior goalkeeper for Slot and Otte to preside over so far.
Competitive game time may still be hard for the 25-year-old to come by, though, and speaking to The Athletic, Adrian has suggested that this could affect Kelleher’s future.
“I’ve a really good relationship with Caoimh, we had so many conversations,” says the Spaniard.
I hope he makes the right decision for himself.”
To some it may be a surprise that Kelleher is still at Liverpool at all.
A lack of involvement in last week’s friendly with Preston had suggested that Kelleher could be close to an exit.
There is still plenty of time and Kelleher has been attracting interest.
However, Liverpool want around £25m for Kelleher and it’s understandable that that could put a lot of potentially interested parties off.
Ultimately, Kelleher has remained professional throughout his time as Liverpool’s No.2 and that will likely continue.
