Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has insisted that Steven Gerrard would jump at the opportunity to join Championship play-off hopefuls Blackburn Rovers before the season ends.
The Ewood Park club confirmed on Thursday morning that their manager John Eustace had decided to leave Rovers to take on a new opportunity with relegation-threatened Derby County.
The search is now on for the Lancashire club to find a replacement for Eustace with time being of the essence ahead of a busy final stretch towards the end of the season.
After an indifferent stint in the Middle East, Gerrard's next move is unclear with him being linked earlier this month to League Two strugglers Carlisle United before they appointed Mark Hughes as their new manager.
Speaking to Spin Genie, Murphy, who made 179 appearances for Liverpool alongside Gerrard in midfield, believes his ex-teammate would relish the chance to move to the second tier.
"I could really see Steven Gerrard at Blackburn and I think he would jump at the opportunity if he was offered the job," the Match of the Day pundit explained.
"It’s a great location in terms of where he is from and they have some good young players and are really pushing in the right direction.
He might consider what he has learned in Saudi and who is making the decisions at the club.
"I'm of the mindset that all managers are improving when they are in roles and he would’ve definitely improved at both Aston Villa and in Saudi.
I think being in Saudi was just to keep him ticking over after Aston Villa and you could argue that was the role that came too early in his managerial career, even though he started well there.
"He would have learned a lot of lessons from that and with the Blackburn job, I think he'd jump for the opportunity." Bookmakers Sky Bet currently have former Everton star and England interim boss Lee Carsley as the favourite to replace Eustace with Gerrard priced at 33/1.
