Former Southampton striker Shane Long has admitted that Virgil van Dijk's ex-teammates could not believe the center-back chose a move to Liverpool over joining Manchester City back in 2018.
The Dutchman was coveted by a host of top sides before completing his switch to Anfield eight years ago as a result of his impressive performances during his spell at St Mary's.
After playing a central role in winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in the following year, he was made captain in the summer of 2023.
In fact, ex-teammate Long has revealed that Southampton's players were perplexed after the defender turned down an approach from Manchester City in order to secure his move to Anfield.
Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Irish Premier Division Odds & Betting, the Irishman admitted: "I remember when he left Southampton and Manchester City were in for him as well.
