Liverpool was one of only five Premier League clubs that did not make a signing in January.
It therefore does not come as a big surprise that many Liverpool fans are not too excited to hear about transfers, knowing that there is a slim chance it materializes.
While manager Arne Slot has repeatedly expressed confidence in his current squad, fans are wary of the risks associated with standing still while rivals strengthen.
This frustration is compounded by memories of previous seasons when injuries derailed Liverpool’s campaigns, despite being in strong positions.
Reports indicate that Liverpool ranked last in Premier League spending for the 2024/25 season, with just £34.7 million spent across both windows?
In contrast, clubs like Manchester City and Brighton spent over £200 million each.
And it seems that Liverpool are following a very rigid transfer strategy if the words of one ‘transfer target’ can be believed.
Ligue 1 man discusses Liverpool interest
Nantes goalkeeper Anthony Lopes has revealed that he declined an opportunity to join Liverpool last summer, citing his desire to remain a first-choice goalkeeper.
Anthony Lopes officially moved from Olympique Lyonnais to FC Nantes on a free in the recent January window.
Speaking candidly about the decision, Lopes explained that while the offer from Liverpool was tempting, he wasn’t ready to step into a backup role at this stage of his career – but did admit if the offer had come in August instead of June he may have accepted:
“Did I say no to become Liverpool’s number 2.
I told myself that I had to keep playing, that I had fire in my legs, and that I couldn’t put my heart on the bench, even if it was at Liverpool, Bayern, or elsewhere.”
“But I’ll be very clear: if this proposal had come at the end of August, just before the end of the transfer window, I would have accepted it, I would have left.”
It would make sense if what the 34-year-old is saying is true, as this was the exact time Liverpool were looking for a goalkeeper – instead signing Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for €30 million.
The Georgian international is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers and is expected to take over as Liverpool’s No?
1 when Alisson eventually departs Anfield.
