'I think': Jamie Carragher says Newcastle have just 'shone a light' on a big problem within the Liverpool squad

Liverpool fell at Wembley Stadium to Newcastle United as the Magpies secured a comfortable 2-1 win in the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds were outplayed from the first whistle onwards in the English capital as Dan Burn and Alexander Isak gave Newcastle a healthy lead before Federico Chiesa added a consolation goal for Liverpool into stoppage time.

With Mohamed Salah criticised by Gary Neville for his performance for Liverpool, it was a game to forget for the Egyptian international, who struggled big time against Newcastle as the winger failed to create a chance or even have a shot.

And Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool’s loss to Newcastle has exposed a big problem in the squad heading into next season.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the full-time whistle, Carragher highlighted that Liverpool have a lack of pace in their attack, with the pundit calling out for the Reds to bring in two forwards in the summer to help complement Salah next season.

Carragher said when asked about what went wrong for Liverpool against Newcastle: “I think what this last week has done is shed light on where Liverpool still needs to improve.

I think the lack of pace in the team is glaring in the attack.

“I almost feel a little bit sorry for Mo Salah, he’s taking a little bit of criticism after the two PSG games where he was up against possibly the best left-back in the world in Nuno Mendes, he didn’t do much and he wasn’t great again today, but he doesn’t get help of the other attackers.

“It’s not like under Jurgen Klopp where they had Mane to bail them out or Firmino.

The other attackers Liverpool have are good players, but they’re not great players, and they’ve relied on him [Salah] so much, and it’s shone a light that Liverpool need to go buy two attackers possibly to play alongside Mo Salah for next season.”

With forwards like Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz on Liverpool’s books, a lack of pace is not the main concern for the Reds given what Arne Slot has at his disposal, with the Reds arguably having the most well-rounded group of attackers in world football.

And as a result, Slot needs to be asking more from his Liverpool attackers when it comes to bursting up the pitch and using their physical traits to help beat opposing players, something only Salah seems to have done this season.

Indeed, the final nine games of the season should give Slot a big enough excuse to try some new things out with his attackers, with Liverpool having the players needed to score even more goals and to cause more damage to rival sides.
