Liverpool face Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium on Sunday in what could be an all-time Carabao Cup final.
The Reds were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League this week after losing to PSG on penalties, with Liverpool and Arne Slot looking to make a comeback in the biggest way possible by winning their first piece of silverware of the season this weekend in the English capital.
Although Liverpool will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Anfield side still head into the fixture as big favourites with Newcastle having Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall unavailable through suspension and injury, respectively.
And Paul Merson has now delivered his prediction on this weekend’s Carabao Cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, the former Arsenal striker made the confident prediction that Liverpool will beat Newcastle on penalties, with Merson noting that the Toon will be up for Sunday’s cup final after losing to Manchester United two years ago on the same stage.
Merson said ahead of the Carabao Cup final: “I’m someone who always gives teams a chance in games, but I didn’t give that to Newcastle in this fixture a few weeks ago!
“I think this game will end 1-1 and go to penalties.
If I had to pick a side to win on penalties, I’d choose Liverpool.
I’m only saying that because I know Liverpool will turn up for this game and I can’t say the same for Newcastle!
Liverpool have been in this situation before and they know their way around finals.

“Newcastle, on the other hand, will have a few nerves to handle if the game goes deep like I expect it to.
I guess it all comes down to whether Newcastle can turn up for this clash knowing and believing they’ve got every chance of beating Liverpool.”
Form goes out the window for games like this, with Newcastle certainly going into Sunday’s final with the confidence that they can get a result against Liverpool despite being without a number of key players.
Yet despite this, Slot’s side are still being billed as the favourites for this weekend’s Carabao Cup final, with Gary Neville predicting Liverpool to beat Newcastle on the basis that the Toon have hardly played at Wembley Stadium.
Indeed, Liverpool have been the best team in England by some distance this season, and the Reds will want to maintain this reputation this weekend by beating Newcastle to the Carabao Cup in a professional manner.
