Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has confessed to having a moment of madness which ended with him kicking a door through after the Reds once missed out on a clean sheet record.
The defensive icon was fanatical about shutting out rivals during his time on the pitch and opened up on an occasion when a last-minute blunder by team-mate Harry Kewell sent him into a rage.
Chasing a club record for clean sheets in the 2006/2007 season, Carragher's dream was shattered during a game against Portsmouth.
A late goal conceded by Rafa Benitez's men meant Liverpool's record hopes were dashed, and Carragher lost his cool.
"I can still remember times that make me feel worse, when it was 4-0 [and we conceded] than if it was 2-0," he said on the Stick to Football podcast, sponsored by Sky Bet.
"I always remember Portsmouth away – it was our last away game of the season, and we were going for the record of most clean sheets, we were on 33 clean sheets for the season.
(
I came in [the dressing room] and kicked the door, I put my foot right through the door when we came in the dressing room, and I was just like [head gone], I was like a lunatic – we didn't get a clean sheet."
Carragher has shared that the frustration over missing out on a clean sheet record cascaded into the Champions League final heartbreak in Athens back in 2007(
The Reds were unable to clinch victory against AC Milan, reminiscent of their triumph two years prior that secured their fifth European title.
"The next game we had against Charlton, Rafa Beni?tez rested everyone because of the Champions League final, we drew 2-2 at home.
We didn't get the clean sheet again and then we don't win the Champions League final, and we don't get the record – it all goes back to that Portsmouth game."
Notorious for his determination, Carragher's quest for defensive perfection wasn't just limited to off the pitch.
So we nearly came to blows on the pitch then after the game you think 'it was a bit much that', but I tried to apologise after the game and he (Arbeloa) threw his hands, so you lose your head again a little bit don't you?"
Carragher amassed 737 appearances for Liverpool and was instrumental in keeping 195 clean sheets in the Premier League
