Stan Collymore says he didn't have a personal relationship with Robbie Fowler, despite scoring an abundance of goals alongside him for Liverpool.
The now 54-year-old took Fowler's place during his first few matches after arriving in 1995, playing alongside Ian Rush in his place - despite the fact that 'God', as he was affectionately known by the Anfield faithful, had scored 31 goals across all competitions the previous season.
Speaking about his partnership with Fowler in an exclusive chat via William Hill, Collymore told the ECHO: "Robbie, when I’ve spoken to him, he’s said there was no issues with me, really.
But I always felt there was a sort of…when I made my Liverpool debut, Robbie Fowler had scored like 34 goals in the season before, but I actually made my Liverpool debut and played my first few games with Ian Rush.
"So I took a player’s place who had scored 34 goals the season before, and I always felt that there was a… I mean, we didn’t have an off-the-field relationship, put it that way." While Collymore and Fowler didn't spend much time with one another away from the pitch, the two were a force to be reckoned with on it.
In the 95/96 season, the two contributed 55 goals across all competitions, while the following campaign saw Fowler and Collymore hit the back of the net another 47 times in combination.
And Collymore was also quick to highlight the effect of their partnership over the course of their two years together.
He added: "And on it, I think it was 105 goals and assists over the two seasons, so it was a very prolific partnership.
I think Liverpool got as strained as it got in terms of, like I say, that relationship with Robbie - which was fine on the pitch, we just never seemed to gel off it."

Fowler wasn't the only striker that Collymore had a tough time getting along with, however, with the striker also noting how he and Alan Shearer didn't quite see eye-to-eye when they played for England internationally.
So I think that that always provides a healthy tension, as long as there’s goals going in on the pitch, it really doesn’t matter if you get on with somebody on or off the pitch.

"And like I say, 105 or 106 goals between Robbie and I, we really didn’t need to be best mates." After breaking through the youth system of Liverpool in 1993, Fowler spent a total of eight years at Anfield before making the move to Leeds United.
