Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes Trent Alexander-Arnold's emotional celebration was relief for the Liverpool star after his match-winner against Leicester City.

The 26-year-old returned from injury to put the Reds on the verge of Premier League glory and a second winners' medal for the academy graduate.

Arne Slot has faced questions throughout the campaign as to whether he can keep the full-back, as well as Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, with the ongoing contract uncertainty.

Van Dijk and Salah have both penned fresh two-year deals, but Alexander-Arnold has faced increasing scrutiny over his future at Anfield with Real Madrid showing strong interest in the defender.

On Sunday, his left-footed effort broke the deadlock to hand Slot's side an important win going into the final games of the season.

Alexander-Arnold took his shirt off before knee-sliding and unleashing a ferocious roar towards the away end after his crucial contribution and it sparked fresh speculation over his future.

"It gave me the impression of a guy that was just relieved, if I’m being totally honest," said Wright, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast.

"If I think of him staying or leaving, it’s still majorly anxious for him and we still don’t know if he’s leaving.

"We’ll find out what it really means at the end of the season.

"It just felt like relief.

It felt like a, ‘Have some of this, f*ck ff' – all those emotions."

Since January, the Liverpool ace has been able to speak to clubs from overseas over a pre-contract agreement upon the expiry of his current deal.

Liverpool are still hopeful they can tie down one of the most successful right-backs in recent history, but face competition from the lure of Real Madrid.

As a result of his match-winning contribution, the Dutch head coach was forced to face questions regarding Alexander-Arnold but he was keen to bat away the scrutiny surrounding the full-back.

"The headline should be today about the goal he scored and not about his contract," Slot argued.

“But what I can say is it would be ridiculous if someone argues his commitment for this club because the work-rate he put in to be back today and make such an important goal, and all the work he has done for this club in all these years he is here, no-one – in my opinion – can argue his commitment to this club.

"But let the headlines be [about] his great goal and not his contract situation."
