Liverpool face Tottenham tonight in the League Cup semi-final second-leg, where the Reds have to overturn a 1-0 deficit.
The north London side claimed a surprise win last month in the first match of the series with Liverpool far from their best against Tottenham, though the fortunes of the two sides have changed drastically since that result.
Liverpool finished top of the UEFA Champions League league phase whilst Tottenham continued their historic slump in the Premier League, with Spurs currently sitting 14th in the Premier League standings, an incredible 29 points off the Reds.
Which is what makes tonight’s League Cup game such a big one for both sides, and former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has already shared why winning this competition is so important for Arne Slot and the Anfield side.

Writing for Liverpool’s official website back in 2022, Kuyt shared how special it felt to win the League Cup with the Reds in 2012 against Cardiff City, with the former Dutch international scoring in extra-time and then in the shoot-out to win the title.
Kuyt wrote: “I had six great years at Liverpool and we challenged for many honours in that time.
But the League Cup was the only trophy I ever lifted.
We obviously played in the Champions League final in 2007 and finished second in the Premier League a few years later.
I finally got my hands on some in February 2012.
These occasions are the ones you remember when you retire.”
