Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League run came to an end last night after PSG eliminated the Reds on penalties.
The Anfield side went 1-0 down early on in the second-half thanks to an Ousmane Dembele tap-in before PSG managed to see out the game and beat Liverpool in a shootout, with Gianluigi Donnarumma making two top saves to deny Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones.
With Arne Slot criticised for how he went about using his Liverpool substitutes, the result feels like the first real setback of the Dutchman’s tenure on Merseyside, though this weekend’s League Cup final could offer the Reds a big chance to win back some support.
Yet former Celtic manager Neil Lennon has said Slot has a problem with his squad that was always going to lead to an exit from the Champions League this season.

Speaking on Premier Sports after PSG’s win against Liverpool, the pundit noted that the Reds simply don’t have the depth to make a far run in the Champions League whilst also competing for the Premier League.
Although Gabriel Agbonlahor has said Liverpool have the most talented player in the world in their squad in Mohamed Salah, last night’s performance at Anfield showed why the Reds are willing to strengthen five positions in the summer transfer window.
And for Lennon, Liverpool’s current squad simply doesn’t have the depth or the quality to go all the way in the Champions League, especially with the Merseyside giants giving it their all in the Premier League, as well.
Lennon said: “I’m not convinced on the strength and depth of Liverpool.
I think Arne Slot has done an amazing job in terms of the Premier League, but it may be one competition too many by the looks of things.”

With Luis Diaz catching some flack for his Liverpool performance against PSG, there is a real chance that every area of the squad could see one or two new additions if the money is made available to be spent in the summer.
Yet with Trent Alexander-Arnold coming off injured for Liverpool, defence is the area that most fans will agree needs the most work, with the Reds lacking real world-class options beyond the usual starters at the back.
Indeed, the summer is promising to be a good one for Liverpool, and new additions in the transfer window should be enough to help Slot compete for both the Premier League and the Champions League next season.
